The Ethereum culture has evolved with the growing number of participants and subcultures within the ecosystem, and while there are concerns about the negative perception of cryptocurrency, the presence of talented individuals and continuous building of innovative projects gives hope for the future of Ethereum.
Deep dives
Rottke: An Open Source Tool for Accounting and Portfolio Tracking
Rottke is an open source tool for accounting and portfolio tracking and management that focuses on privacy. It was created by Left-Harris, a crypto OG and founder of Rottke. The tool was initially developed as a way for Left-Harris to calculate and submit his own taxes in the crypto space. Rottke prioritizes user privacy by allowing them to calculate their crypto taxes locally without sharing sensitive information with third-party websites. It offers a free tier with limits and a paid tier with additional features, such as state tracking. The future plans for Rottke include expanding into portfolio management and enabling users to actively manage their funds, including on-chain transactions and trading on exchanges directly from the platform.
The Evolution of Ethereum Culture and Concerns for the Ecosystem
Over the years, Ethereum culture has evolved with the growing number of participants and various subcultures within the ecosystem. The community now includes regions, traders, builders, and those focused on privacy and security. However, there are concerns about the perception of Ethereum and cryptocurrency in general, as there is still a negative image associated with scams and criminal activities. The challenge lies in changing this perception and highlighting the positive impact of decentralized technologies. Additionally, the ever-changing nature of the space and the rapid development of new protocols and primitives pose challenges for staying updated and relevant. Nevertheless, the presence of young, talented individuals and the continuous building of innovative projects gives hope for the future of Ethereum.
The Role of Delegates and Advocacy in Ethereum's Governance
Left-Eris is known for active participation in Ethereum's governance and being one of the largest delegates in several projects. He is passionate about privacy, public goods, and protocol governance. Left-Eris's involvement in governance is driven by a desire to influence the direction of projects and contribute to making the ecosystem better. He values the power of delegate voting and the influence it can have on project development. While governance involvement can be time-consuming, Left-Eris sees it as a way to advocate for important causes and make a positive impact.
Hope and Concerns for Ethereum's Future
Left-Eris is hopeful about the future of Ethereum due to the presence of talented individuals, the continuous building of innovative projects, and the potential to create better financial systems. However, there are concerns about potential black swan events, such as major protocol vulnerabilities or negative public perception. Left-Eris worries about the negative image associated with crypto, as it can lead to political action against the ecosystem. Education, improved security, and responsible use of technology are crucial in addressing these concerns and ensuring a positive future for Ethereum.
We are, arguably, still early in the crypto industry, but some people were really…really early. One of them is Lefteris Karapetsas, who joined EthDev in 2014 and contributed to building the Ethereum ecosystem, since before the genesis block. His crypto journey is one for the history books, as after EthDev he joined Slock.it, right around the time of The DAO raise…and hack. Lefteris remained a core supporter of decentralisation and an active member of the Ethereum community, being involved (and delegated) in multiple projects’ governance. More recently, he founded Rotki, an open source portfolio management app that aims to preserve user privacy.
We were joined by Lefteris Karapetsas, true Ethereum OG, to discuss his 10-year long journey through the Ethereum ecosystem, from joining EthDev (pre-Devcon 0) to founding Rotki.
