Travelers in the Night Eps. 803 & 804: Monster NEO & Tracie’s Solo
Jul 27, 2025
In this intriguing discussion, listeners are introduced to the half-mile asteroid 2024 JW1, discovered by a diligent astronomer. Its safe trajectory is a relief for Earth, as it won't approach closer than 53 lunar distances. The excitement continues with Tracie Beuden’s inspiring solo observatory debut, where she not only operated the telescope but also hosted visitors, adding a personal touch to her astronomical journey. The quest for knowledge in the cosmos never ceases to amaze!

Rare Monster Asteroid Discovered
A half-mile diameter asteroid named 2024 JW1 was discovered traveling through Auriga constellation.
Such large asteroids enter Earth's atmosphere roughly every 450,000 years with catastrophic impact potential.

Impact Effects of Large Asteroids
A half-mile asteroid impact creates a 7.6-mile-wide crater and feels like a major 7.7 Richter scale earthquake 85 miles away.
It generates 199 mph winds destroying most buildings and stripping 90% of trees' leaves.

Today's 2 topics:
- Since larger space rocks are rare, it was surprising when my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Hannes Groller found a half mile diameter asteroid traveling through the constellation of Auriga. Fortunately on it’s current path 2024 JW1 can’t come closer than 53 lunar distances from us. Asteroid hunters will continue to track 2024 JW1 to make sure that it does not become a threat as it passes near Earth, Mars , and Jupiter.
- After months of training Survey Operations Specialist Tracie Beuden came full circle during her first solo 3 night observing run on the 60 inch telescope as she hosted groups of visitors as the observer instead of the tour guide.
