023. Father's Day: 3 dads (including mine!) talk about sugar

A special Father's Day edition in the company of UK Low Carb's Dan Greef, Jeff Gerken (from Episode 16)... and my dad, Alan Gorman!

Dan talks about the impact that eating low carb has had on him as a father, and on his whole family. He wants his young children to be free free to make choices and to be informed to know what works for them. Both his children have nut allergies, so in a way, that makes cutting sugary foods easier. Dan's wife changed her diet when she had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with their first child. He decided to start eating low carb too. Now they are much more aware about the importance of being role models and giving real, whole foods to their two children, for their healthy bodies, brains, and development.

Jeff talks about his own father and father-in-law, and how he perceived them as old fat men! He never made the connection how his formerly slim cross-country running father became overweight in middle age. Jeff himself was active and sporty, and kept his weight down that way. But then when an injury stopped him from playing sports, he couldn't even keep up with his much older father-in-law. Diets left him feeling hungry and with no energy. He thought weight gain and health issues were inevitable as you get older. As a father, he limits his own son's consumption of soda because it used to be his downfall, and his family is what inspired him to change his diet and his goals.

And my third guest is my lovely dad, Alan Gorman. Because he's been in contact with me going on about... er, educating people about sugar, he's made some adjustments in his own diet. For example, he cut down on orange juice. He also learned more about how carbohydrates and sugar affect the body. In this recording during his visit to Montreal in 2018, we talk about how modern processed foods may have "hijacked" our intuition. We also talk about how food companies engineer food products to make them hyper-palatable. Unlike real, whole foods that his parents and grandparents used to eat, these types of processed products are developed in a lab to have a "bliss point" that makes people want more... and buy more!
