Deep dives
Climate activists block Burning Man's main road to protest private jets and single-use plastics
Climate activists embedded within the Burning Man community blockaded the main road to the festival, demanding that Burning Man ban private jets and single-use plastics. The small group of protesters aimed to raise awareness about the need for systemic change and degrowth in the face of the climate crisis, critiquing Burning Man's tech utopianism as insufficient. While the protest itself had limited impact and faced backlash from annoyed attendees, the event captured significant attention and sparked social media debates surrounding climate activism, police violence, indigenous rights, and the changing nature of counterculture. It highlighted tensions between hedonism and austerity in the climate movement, as well as the complex challenges faced by festivals aiming to balance sustainability and individual freedom.
The challenges of balancing grassroots activism and organizational coordination at Burning Man
The protest at Burning Man exposed the tension between grassroots activism and organizational efforts to mandate sustainable practices. Climate activists within the festival called for stronger measures such as banning private jets, regulating single-use plastics, and capping generator and propane use. However, some burners questioned the need for protest, citing Burning Man's existing sustainability initiatives. The clash between individualistic ideals and collective action raised questions about the future of Burning Man as a countercultural event, with activists urging the festival to do more in the real world and mobilize burners beyond the bubble of the event.
The performative nature of protests and the power of social media
The Burning Man protest demonstrated the performative nature of activism and its relationship with social media. While the on-ground protest had limited impact and faced opposition from attendees and indigenous members of the Paiute tribe, the confrontations and conflicts caught on video went viral and ignited discourse online. The clash between performances of protest, law enforcement, burners, and online observers highlighted the complex ways in which language, gestures, and actions execute coded scripts and trigger emotional responses on social media platforms.
The changing narratives and challenges of climate activism
The Burning Man protest revealed the changing narratives and challenges surrounding climate activism. Some activists advocate for high-visibility pressure points and viral protests, acknowledging the decline in protest numbers and the need for different approaches to raise consciousness and awareness. However, the protest also raised questions about the efficacy of protest in an era of widespread cynicism and confusion where narratives around climate change have become entangled with issues of colonialism, inequality, capitalism, and counterculture. The complexities of agency, scale, and organizing were also explored, highlighting the need for systemic change beyond individual actions.
The dilemma of hedonism and austerity in climate activism
The clash between hedonism and austerity emerged as a dilemma within the climate movement. While Burning Man represents a hedonistic countercultural gathering, climate activists criticized it as part of the problem rather than the solution to the climate crisis. The tension between the pleasure-seeking ethos of Burning Man and the need for systemic change and carbon reduction underscored the challenges of reconciling individualistic desires with collective action and the potential need for lifestyle changes and a shift towards austerity to address climate change effectively.

On Sunday (27 Aug 2023), climate activists blocked the road to Burning Man, demanding that the festival—which was founded on principles of decommodification, radical self-reliance, and civic responsibility—ban single-use plastics and private jets. While the protest delayed a relatively small amount of physical traffic for less than an hour, it seized swathes of the online space for days given the action's adjacency to so many memetic themes, incl.: #climate, #collapse, #decarbonization, #privilege, #indigenous (land), #police and ofc the punching bag that is #burningman.
Much of the initial drama played out on the Instagram and X accounts of gonzo journalist Michelle Lhooq (Rave New World) who broke the story while on assignment for The Guardian. On Monday, Michelle joined New Models from Reno to discuss what she witnessed as well as the changing nature of activism’s stage both online and off.
