Deep dives
Challenges to Marriage Ideals
Voices from both the left and the right argue against the institution of marriage, claiming it to be unfavorable for men or women, leading to an anti-nuptial culture. This societal shift poses challenges in appreciating the significance of marriage and family for adults and children.
Marriage as a Predictor of Societal Well-being
Studies highlight marriage and family structures as powerful predictors of societal outcomes, such as rates of deaths of despair and levels of happiness. A community's rate of marital status is revealed as the top predictor of well-being, signaling a vital correlation between marriage and societal welfare.
Financial Benefits of Marriage
Marriage is linked to higher household incomes and financial stability, with married men earning more than single peers. Married individuals exhibit better work performance, financial security, and stability due to shared expenses and reduced financial strains compared to single or cohabiting setups.
Marriage and Happiness
Married individuals tend to report higher levels of happiness compared to single or cohabiting counterparts. Marriage offers social support, emotional engagement, and a sense of purpose, contributing to overall well-being. Partner commitment and emotional engagement within marriage emerge as key factors in sustaining happiness and fulfillment.
Why are healthy marriages so vital for a flourishing society? What factor best predicts a high-quality marriage? What are some of the most common myths people believe about marriage today and how can Christians make a difference to encourage a marriage-friendly culture? These are just a few of the questions Sean discusses with sociologist Brad Wilcox regarding his new book Get Married. Dr. Wilcox brings his years of studying marriage to respond to some of the biggest myths about marriage, but also give some practical insights about how to help create a marriage-friendly culture.
Brad Wilcox is Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, Future of Freedom Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, and a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. The author of Get Married: Why Americans Should Defy the Elites, Forge Strong Families and Save Civilization (Harper Collins, 2024), Wilcox studies marriage, fatherhood, and the impact of strong and stable families on men, women, and children.
