Understanding Power and Average Power
Power in laser therapy refers to the brightness of the light source and is measured in watts or milliwatts. Average power, not peak power, is critical because it measures the energy delivered to the tissues. A high peak power with low average power results in a low light dose. Therefore, when shopping for a laser, focus on the average power as it is most important.
Exploring Irradiance and Energy
Irradiance, also known as power density or intensity, refers to the concentration of light in a given space. It is the power divided by the area being treated. Energy, measured in joules, is the total amount of light delivered. Energy density, measured in joules per centimeter squared, determines the dose. Although energy density only measures at the surface and is imperfect for deep tissue treatments, a dose of 4 to 10 joules per centimeter squared is recommended for effective results.
Understanding Frequency and Classifications
Frequency refers to how often the light is turned on in one second, measured in hertz. The duty cycle refers to the amount of time the light is turned on and off. Class three lasers produce 0.5 watts or less, while class four lasers produce more than half a watt. However, the power density or dose is calculated in joules per centimeter squared, and the intensity of the light on tissues can be the same for different wattage lasers depending on the spot size.
