Reliance on Chinese Solar Imports

There is significant reliance on imports of solar panels and components from China, as it remains the largest manufacturer in the global solar market. Despite India's efforts to boost local production, imports from China constituted over 90% of India's solar cell and module supplies as of 2022, reflecting a challenging dependency. The Indian government has introduced restrictions to promote domestic manufacturing, but the low cost of Chinese solar products continues to hinder substantial local growth. Even as India begins to export solar products, it faces hurdles in producing essential materials like polysilicon, which limits its manufacturing capabilities.
