His writing has appeared in publications around the world including The New York Times, London's The Observer, Sight & Sound, Empire and In These Times, where he was chief film critic from 1999 to 2003. Rothkopf is a voting member of the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle, the latter which he chaired from 2012 to 2014.
