6 - Darin Gordon: Leading a State’s Medicaid Program
Today we’re joined by Darin Gordon, one of the preeminent experts on the Medicaid program, having served as the nation’s longest-serving director of a state Medicaid agency. For 10 years, Darin ran Tennessee’s Medicaid program - TennCare, an $11 billion health care enterprise that provides services to over 1.5 million Tennesseans. During his time, Tennessee led the way in adopting managed care, dealt with expanding and, later due to budget constraints, having to reduce beneficiary rolls, and experimented with innovative ways to reduce costs while improving care. While Medicare is the federal health entitlement that gets most of the attention, it’s Medicaid that covers more Americans and has enabled states to innovate. In our conversation Darin share his insights into the future of this program and how we can improve care for the neediest Americans.
