The Book of Mormon tells of a group of giant people named the Jaredites who came to the Americas long ago, direct from the destruction at the tower of Babel. Several extra-biblical elements are mentioned relating to the tower of Babel story, and surprisingly, these stories exist in ancient legends unavailable to Joseph Smith.
