In this engaging discussion, the complexities of finding purpose are unraveled. A soothing guided meditation sets the tone for exploration, encouraging listeners to create their own sense of purpose, rather than waiting for it to appear. The concept of 'ikigai' is introduced, emphasizing the blend of passion, profession, and vocation. Personal stories highlight the importance of connections, while practical strategies help identify core values. Ultimately, embracing uncertainty and everyday moments becomes a pathway to discovering meaningful purpose.
Creating one's purpose through intentional reflection and action is more empowering than simply waiting to discover it.
Recognizing and appreciating everyday moments can redefine joy and enhance fulfillment, transforming our understanding of what purpose means.
Deep dives
Finding Joy in the Mundane
Casual magic is about recognizing and appreciating the beauty in everyday moments rather than just the extraordinary events in life. Most days consist of routine activities that often go unnoticed, but it is essential to train ourselves to find joy in these small experiences. By focusing on the little things that bring happiness, we can redefine our understanding of joy and cultivate a deeper sense of fulfillment. This approach encourages a mindset shift, enabling individuals to elevate their daily lives beyond the one percent of extraordinary occurrences.
Understanding Purpose
Many people grapple with the concept of purpose, which often leads to feelings of existential dread or confusion. However, purpose plays a critical role in motivating individuals and guiding their choices every day. Rather than waiting to discover their purpose, people can take the proactive approach of creating it through intentional reflection and action. This understanding suggests that purpose is not only a grand life goal but can also be found in everyday tasks and experiences.
Routes to Discovering Purpose
The podcast outlines three main routes for discovering personal purpose: the spiritual way, the strategic way, and the ikigai way. The spiritual approach involves exploring spiritual beliefs or cultural influences that shape one's understanding of purpose. The strategic route focuses on defining core values, guiding principles, and crafting a personal mission statement to align one’s actions with their true self. The ikigai method suggests finding a balance among what one enjoys, what they are good at, what the world needs, and what can be monetized, providing a practical framework for identifying a purpose.
Personal Experience and Reflection
The speaker shares personal experiences of searching for purpose throughout life, including the realization that pursuing a veterinary career was not fulfilling after years of preparation. They emphasize that purpose can shift and evolve over time, with one's core values remaining stable despite changing missions. Importantly, they highlight the necessity of introspection, reflection, and the willingness to try different paths until one finds the resonant purpose that provides meaning. This journey highlights that even moments of uncertainty or feeling lost contribute to the broader understanding of one’s purpose.
Hi friendsss, welcome back to the fifth episode of ✨ Finding your Casual Magic ✨ (five episodes already ahhh)
Today in this solo episode we’re talking about purpose dun dun dun!!! I feel like purpose is the source of so much existentialism, so much fear, scariness but we're going to try and make it a little less scary. Why do we feel motivated to get out of bed every morning? Why is it we might feel compelled to change jobs? Why is it we feel we need to make changes to our life? Or why do we feel content living the way that we are?
One could argue that all of these things come down to a sense of purpose, guiding all of our decisions is that North Star of our purpose in the world but the sad thing is, it can sometimes feel quite elusive. Many of us don't know what our purpose is and some of us would rather not think about that because it can be a dramatic and scary topic. But the thing is, all of our decisions, day to day, big and small, are driven by our sense of purpose. So what if, rather than waiting to discover our purpose, we could create it?
Before we get into today's topic about finding and creating our purpose I start the episode with a guided meditation where we really just take a moment to be, to ground ourselves, to come back to our breath. I then look at three main routes that one can use to find their purpose in this world. I'll be looking at how culture can affect our sense of purpose, how our society and the people around us affect our purpose. I'm also going to share some of my own personal journeys with discovering what my purpose is in this world.
I close the episode with ‘Casual Magic of the Week’ followed by intention setting for the week ahead. Join me as we ask ourselves…
What went well this week?
What am I proud of this week?
What is a little joy that I can celebrate?
What is something that challenged me this week?
Based on these reflections, choose a one word intention for your coming week.
I am so grateful that you’re here and I hope you love this episode, and if no one has told you today, you are enough. 💛
