Deep dives
Education Amidst Conflict in Ukraine
In Ukraine, children face significant challenges in accessing education due to ongoing conflict. Schools, like Lyceum number 153 in Kiev, have been affected by missile strikes, directly impacting the learning environment. Students express anxiety over family members serving on the front lines, which can hinder their focus during lessons. Despite the dangers, some classes continue under precarious conditions, with air raid sirens frequently interrupting lessons and forcing students to seek shelter during attacks.
Learning Challenges in Gaza and Sudan
Gaza's educational infrastructure has been severely compromised, with most schools destroyed or repurposed for humanitarian needs, leaving many children without access to education. Makeshift classrooms exist in tent camps; however, the vast majority of children do not attend these classes, leading to a loss of educational skills. In Sudan, the situation is similarly dire, with schools transformed into displacement camps, affecting millions of children who now lack formal education. Amidst these crises, reports of child exploitation and increased violence signal a worrying future for children who, instead of attending school, are caught in the turmoil of war.
Life is uncertain for children in war zones. There, school can be a source of stability or just another thing that war obliterates. We hear reports on what school is like in three of the world's most active war zones: Sudan, Gaza and Ukraine.
