April grew up in a Christian Nationalist community and was incredibly involved with her church (as a pastor's daughter). However, April began to view her faith, political views and lifestyle in a totally different way as she started to deconstruct harmful beliefs she had been taught. That led to April writing Star-Spangled Jesus, which touches on the dangers of Christian Nationalism and how leaving that mindset helped April find a truer faith.
