070 | AMA: Vitamin D Uncensored, Deficiency, Toxicity, Covid-19, Oh My!
This Friday, I take an in-depth look at vitamin D, a topic that has become quite controversial due to the conflicting information put out by various sources about its efficacy in reducing the risk of contracting and becoming seriously ill with coronavirus. Opinions about what constitutes vitamin D deficiency also vary significantly, but studies show that people whose vitamin D level is lower than 30 nanograms per milliliter have an approximately 20% higher risk of all-cause mortality. Advice about the appropriate daily dosage is also inconsistent and, for simplicity’s sake, some researchers have pointed out that doubling the average vitamin D level of the global population would be the least expensive way to decrease mortality and increase longevity. Vitamin D has been found to be beneficial in the treatment of many conditions such as Crohn’s disease, dementia, and cancer and, during the current pandemic, we need to be able to access reliable and accurate information about the role vitamin D can play in the fight against Covid.
