Deep Learning and the New Normal
Deep learning is a transformative approach to education that focuses on quality learning that stays with students for life. It involves engaging students in meaningful and relevant learning experiences that develop the six C's: collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, character, and citizenship. As we navigate through the current challenges of virtual learning, it is important to foster deep learning by providing students with opportunities to engage in authentic tasks and projects that connect to their interests and the real world. This new normal should prioritize student well-being and achievement, creating a system that combines excellence and equity. Educators should approach this shift with humility, openness to learning, and a commitment to continuous improvement. By working together, sharing expertise, and focusing on the bigger picture, we can create a new normal that is more engaging, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all students.
Developing Contextual Literacy as a Coach
As a coach, developing contextual literacy involves being a learner and working collaboratively with others. Rather than jumping to quick solutions, coaches should approach each situation with humility and a willingness to understand the unique context and needs of the individuals and organizations they work with. They should actively seek out opportunities for professional learning and support, both in terms of expertise and emotional well-being. Coaches can merge their existing knowledge and skills with new learning, being flexible and adaptable in their approaches. It is important to embrace ambiguity and be comfortable with not having all the answers, as this allows for growth and innovation. By being an expert and an apprentice simultaneously, coaches can better support the development of deep learning practices and contribute to positive change at the local, district, and state levels.
The New Normal and System Change
The concept of a new normal has emerged during these times of uncertainty and challenges. While the term itself can be superficial, it signifies the need for change and the recognition that the previous normal was not sufficient or desirable. The new normal should prioritize deep learning and address the issues of the previous system, aiming for excellence and equity. This requires system-wide change at the local, district, and state levels. To support this change, districts need to create a culture of collaboration, collective responsibility, and continuous improvement. They should focus on supporting teachers and providing the necessary professional learning and emotional support. The new normal should be guided by the values of engagement, equity, and making a positive impact on students' lives and society as a whole.
Supporting Districts in the New Normal
In the new normal, districts will need support in various areas that they may not have considered before. One critical aspect is changing the district culture to prioritize collaboration, learning, and innovation. Districts should foster lateral and vertical learning, allowing for the sharing of expertise and ideas within and across schools and districts. Creating networks and communities of practice can facilitate this collaboration. Districts also need to develop a culture of accountability that promotes both well-being and achievement. This means focusing on internal accountability that empowers teachers and ensures their professional growth and development. Furthermore, districts should take a system-wide perspective and encourage a sense of collective responsibility among all stakeholders. By providing the necessary support, resources, and professional learning opportunities, districts can create a thriving new normal that benefits all students and educators.
