The Neurodivergent Woman podcast founders, Monique and Mitchelle, met through work and shared a passion for feminism and yoga. Monique, being neurodivergent, and Mitchelle, neurotypical, collaborated to create a platform focusing on neurodivergent women, covering a range of topics from autism to ADHD.
Neurodivergence, as discussed on the podcast, encompasses various differences in brain functionality beyond the 'typical' norms, challenging traditional societal expectations. Taliesin Switch, a guest on the show, highlighted the concept of neuroqueer theory, emphasizing the rejection of societal norms around neurotypical behavior and encouraging the acceptance and celebration of neurodivergent expressions.
In the BDSM and kink community, consent is paramount and distinct from abuse. Taliesin emphasized the role of explicit communication in negotiating BDSM activities, underscoring the need for clear boundaries and mutual agreement. The analogy of a boxing match versus a street fight was used to illustrate the importance of consent and risk mitigation in BDSM.
Neurodivergent individuals, including Taliesin, shared experiences of sensory sensitivities impacting their work and personal life. Strategies such as regulating sensory input, setting boundaries, and explicit communication were highlighted as effective ways to manage sensory challenges. Taliesin's sensory aversions, like discomfort with bodily fluids, also presented unique considerations in navigating intimate encounters.
The podcast conversation touched on the intersection of neurodivergence, queer identity, and participation in the kink community. Taliesin and the hosts discussed how non-conformity to societal norms, explicit communication, and the structured nature of kink activities can resonate with neurodivergent individuals. The discussion highlighted the acceptance and understanding offered within these inclusive communities.
Content warning: In this episode we talk explicitly and directly about sex. Please be mindful of this if you usually listen with children around.
This week we welcome Talisin Switch to the podcast. Talisin is a neurodivergent sex worker and educator, specialising in BDSM and queer exploration. They consider themself to be a person with one foot in theoretical academics and the other in practical experience and use an integrative approach to their work. They're passionate about further aiding people's knowledge of themselves in a welcoming and safe environment.
Talisin gives us a rundown on neuroqueer theory and shares their personal experience of neurodivergence. They take us through what their job entails, and we dive deep into sexual content, sex as play, disability and sex, the crucial role of sex education, and what BDSM means. Finally, we cover the overlap of neurodivergence and kink / gender-diverse / sexuality-diverse communities.
