Deep dives
Napoleon's Potential for a Longer Reign
The Treaty of Amiens in 1802 was a crucial turning point for Napoleon's potential to stay in power. If the peace had lasted, he could have maintained power and had peaceful relations with Europe. Other key moments that could have extended his reign include the peace of Tilsit in 1807 and making peace with the Allies in 1813. Despite his eventual downfall, there was a possibility of a Napoleonic dynasty on the French throne until it was overthrown in the Franco-Prussian War.
The Influence of Peace with Britain
Peace with Britain, particularly during the Amiens Treaty of 1802-1803, was essential for Napoleon's longevity. Had he managed to remain hostile to Britain and maintain a peaceful relationship, it could have significantly impacted his ability to stay in power. However, Napoleon's attempts to strangle British trade through the Berlin Decrees and the Continental System ultimately escalated tensions.
Assessing Blame for the Napoleonic Wars
Napoleon can be attributed responsibility for certain conflicts, such as the Peninsula War in the Iberian Peninsula, where he imposed his brother as the king of Spain. The invasion of Russia in 1812 was also his decision. However, it is worth noting that the other five wars of the coalition were initiated by allies against France, and Britain provided financial support for these coalitions.
Napoleon's Views on Economics and Trade
Napoleon believed in the protectionist ideas of Colbert and implemented measures like the Continental System to strangle British trade. He aimed to undermine Britain's economic power, which he perceived as solely driven by profit. However, his protectionist policies were met with challenges like smuggling and the desire for free trade, ultimately diminishing the effectiveness of his economic strategies.
Andrew Roberts (website, follow on X) is a historian, Visiting Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and a member of the House of Lords. He joins the podcast to talk about his Napoleon: A Life.
The conversation begins with a discussion of different counterfactuals regarding ways in which Napoleon might have been able to stay in power, which leads to Roberts explaining his view that the wars of the era could be understood at least in part as resulting from a rejection of free trade. Other topics include:
* Meritocracy as a guiding principle of the French Revolution and a justification for Napoleon’s regime
* Napoleon’s personal magnetism and why men were willing to follow him
* The relationship with Josephine, and whether or not it influenced any of his political decision
* Whether Napoleon was in fact the greatest general of his time
