Deep dives
David's Scrum Journey
David Smeen, a professional Scrum trainer, shares his journey to becoming a PST and his introduction to Scrum. He grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada, and moved around before settling in London, Ontario, where he currently resides. David discovered Scrum in 2007 while working at a college in northern Alberta. Impressed by its common-sense approach, he became a Scrum Master and soon realized the challenges of implementing Scrum in a large organization. Despite facing compromises, he continued to embrace agile practices and joined my planet digital in 2012, where he applied Scrum in curriculum development and product ownership roles.
The Valuable Skills and Opportunities
After being terminated from his previous position, David sought opportunities in a thriving tech hub and landed a job at my planet digital (now orium, incorporated) in Toronto. The company fostered a team-centric environment with autonomous teams working on web and mobile apps for enterprise clients. David utilized his Scrum training to practice agile contracting, form cross-functional teams, and prioritize quality deliverables. These experiences enriched his role as a Scrum trainer and allowed him to share his knowledge with clients and fellow trainers, embracing the importance of teaching and continuous learning.
Becoming a Professional Scrum Trainer
David's passion for teaching and sharing his experience with others led him to become a Professional Scrum Trainer (PST). Combining his background in education and his interest in Scrum, David saw being a PST as an opportunity to educate and inspire professionals in the agile community. He finds great honor in being recognized as an expert in his field and enjoys being part of a diverse and intelligent community of trainers. David appreciates the opportunity to contribute to the consistent and scalable curriculum provided by scrum.org and continues to find joy in his role as a PST.
