223 You're Reading Your Cortisol All Wrong, and Your Thyroid Is Why, with Dr. Jaclyn Smeaton

Cortisol has become the hormone everyone loves to blame, the go-to villain for stress, stubborn weight, and feeling wired all the time. But that reputation misses what cortisol is actually doing in your body, and it skips right past the role your thyroid plays in the whole thing. Inna sits down with Dr. Jaclyn Smeaton, a naturopathic physician and the Chief Medical Officer at Dutch Test, who reads cortisol panels all day long and has watched even trained clinicians get them wrong for years. What she has come to understand points to a connection between cortisol and your thyroid that almost no one is talking about.

Dr. Jaclyn reveals why a normal cortisol result can be one of the most misleading things on your labs, why some of the most stressed and wired people are not actually making too much cortisol at all, and why your thyroid may be the hidden reason your stress hormones are behaving the way they are. She and Inna get into the piece of testing most people never see, the mistake that keeps people stuck no matter how much they adjust their thyroid medication, and a surprising twist involving the one medication everyone is talking about right now.

And in a turn most cortisol conversations never take, Dr. Jaclyn shares what finally settles an exhausted, wired system when no supplement is enough, along with an honest look at what real recovery actually asks of you. If something still feels off no matter what you have tried for your thyroid, this is the conversation that may finally explain why.
