Recognition of the Right against Adverse Effects of Climate Change

The Supreme Court of India acknowledged a new fundamental right, the right against the adverse impacts of climate change, owing to the perilous situation faced by the critically endangered great Indian buster bird. With less than 150 individuals remaining in the wild, and the threat of extinction by 2040 due to deaths caused by colliding with power lines, the court intervened to safeguard the bird. It mandated companies involved in renewable energy projects to take measures like undergrounding transmission lines and installing bird diverters to mitigate the risks.
