Deep dives
Mary Ann Hall: Queen of Washington's Elite Brothels
Mary Ann Hall ran one of DC's most exclusive houses of ill-repute in the mid-19th century. Located next to the Capitol building, her three-story establishment was considered the creme de la creme. She had 18 inmates, and the excavation team found thousands of champagne corks, exotic delicacies, and expensive furnishings during a 1997 excavation. Mary Ann Hall was a successful and wealthy businesswoman, catering to middle and upper-class clientele, and employing both white and black women, which was unusual for the time.
Madam Restell: The Controversial Lady Doctor
Madam Restell, whose real name was Ann Trollope, was a self-taught lady doctor in 19th-century New York. She offered abortive potions and provided women with contraception options. Her practice grew popular, but she faced legal challenges and public backlash. She was arrested for second-degree manslaughter after a patient died from her procedures. Despite controversy, Madam Restell's popularity and wealth increased, until she became the target of Anthony Comstock and his Comstock Law, which made disseminating obscene material, including information about contraception, illegal. She tragically took her own life on the day of her trial.
The Significance of Mary Ann Hall and Madam Restell
Mary Ann Hall and Madam Restell were strong, self-made women who found success in controversial professions. While Mary Ann Hall was praised and admired for her business acumen, Madam Restell faced criticism and moral backlash. Both women played unique roles in their respective cities, influencing the sex-related industries of their time. Their stories highlight the challenges and complexities faced by women in a society where sex and women's health were often taboo subjects.

One was Washington's most renowned brothel owner, who opened up a gilded bawdy house just a stone's throw from the Capitol building. The other made quite a scandalous splash as the East Coast's most infamous lady doctor/abortionist. Let's talk about sex, scandal, contraception and abortion - about the lives of women of the evening, and the lengths 19th century women went to in order to find a little help in the realm of family planning.
