Deep dives
Judy Bindel's Background and Activism
Judy Bindel is a radical feminist journalist and activist who has been fighting against male violence, prostitution, and pornography. She co-founded Justice for Women, a law reform group that supports women prosecuted for killing violent male partners. Bindel has become involved in the gender critical debate alongside other radical feminists like J.K. Rowling. She has authored several books, including 'Straight Expectations' and 'Feminism for Women, The Real Root to Liberation'.
Leaving Home and Finding Feminism
Bindel left home at 15 due to bullying in school and the prejudice she faced as a lesbian. Seeking a better life, she moved to Leeds where she encountered a vibrant feminist community. Leeds was a hub for feminist activism, addressing issues such as sex shops, sex cinemas, domestic violence, and the mishandling of cases like the Yorkshire Ripper. Despite being younger than the other feminists she interacted with, Bindel was mentored by them and learned about the history of women's liberation.
Justice for Women and Challenging Injustice
In 1990, Bindel played a key role in establishing Justice for Women, an organization focused on addressing the injustice faced by women who had responded to male violence and ended up being victimized by the criminal justice system. They campaigned on cases like Kiranjit Ahluwalia and Emma Humphreys, raising awareness about women who were wrongly convicted of murder after enduring years of abuse. Their efforts led to legal changes and the release of these women. Justice for Women continues to fight for the rights of women who are impacted by violence and discrimination.
Julie Bindel is a radical feminist, journalist and activist. Leaving home at 15, she moved to Leeds in search of – in her own words - 'scary-sounding feminists'. Quickly she found her passions lay in fighting against prostitution, pornography and violence against women. She founded Justice for Women, a feminist campaigning organisation that supports, and advocates on behalf of, women who have fought back against or killed violent men. On the podcast, Julie speaks about growing up in the North-East of England, her fight in the gender ideology debate and shares her thoughts on Pretty Woman.
