God's spirit is portrayed as the source of life and order in creation. However, the same spirit has the power to bring judgement and decreate. Examples include the story of Adam and Eve, the flood narrative, and the appearance of giants.
The idea of eternal life is associated with God's spirit. The tree of life in the Garden of Eden symbolizes a divine-human relationship that can lead to eternal life. The flood story represents a return to the original state of creation, where God's spirit has the power to bring new creation.
Throughout the flood narrative, a remnant of righteous individuals and animals is preserved by God's spirit. These individuals and animals are sustained by God's breath of life, representing the continuation of God's creation purpose.
After the flood, God makes a covenant promise to never again decreate creation. The presence of God's spirit is connected to this promise of new creation, as seen in God's response to Noah's sacrifice and the wind that causes the waters to recede.
When we think of God’s Spirit, judgment is probably not what comes to mind. But the biblical authors saw God’s Spirit as the one who gave life and took it away—the one who could create, de-create, and recreate. In this episode, Tim, Jon, and Carissa follow the theme of God’s Spirit through the second half of the first movement of Genesis.
