Using Generative AI Tools in Writing Courses
Perry Fissiti, a senior lecturer at Boston University, discusses her integration of generative AI tools like ChatCHPT and Adobe Firefly in her writing and research courses. This includes using AI-generated images, AI as a peer reviewer for student work, and assisting with course readings. By sharing her experiences with AI tools, Perry emphasizes the importance of incorporating AI in writing courses to enhance student learning.
Teaching Experience Journey and Early Interest in Education
Perry shares her journey into teaching, which began at a young age when she started teaching English language learners at 16. Despite initially wanting to pursue a career in the medical field, Perry discovered her passion for teaching during a language institute experience. This early exposure to teaching led her to a lifelong career in education, where she now integrates AI tools to enhance student learning experiences.
Integration of AI in Digital Media and Writing Research Courses
Perry details her teaching approach in digital media and writing research courses at Boston University, focusing on integrating AI tools like Adobe Creative Cloud and ChatGPT. Students engage in activities such as remediating emails into video formats and analyzing AI-generated images. By incorporating AI into assignments and discussions, Perry highlights the importance of developing students' AI literacy and digital media skills.
Enhancing Reading and Art Activities with AI
In the writing research and inquiry course, Perry explores how AI can aid in summarizing readings and generating art inspired by famous artists. Through AI tools like ChatGPT, students can efficiently summarize complex readings and create art pieces aligned with specific artists' styles. By guiding students in AI-driven activities related to reading and art, Perry underscores the benefits of leveraging AI to enhance learning experiences and encourage critical thinking.
I talked recently with Pary Fassihi, senior lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences Writing Program at Boston University, about her use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Adobe Firefly in her writing and research courses. I’ve known Pary a long time… She’s in my first book, Teaching with Classroom Response Systems, about using clickers in the language instruction courses she was teaching back around 2007. These days, she still teaches some language courses, but most of her teaching is for the writing program at Boston. And she’s been sharing some very interesting things on LinkedIn about the ways she has integrated generative AI in her courses! In the interview, she talks about using AI-generated images with her students, having ChatGPT play the role of peer reviewer for student work, getting AI to help students with course readings, and much more.
