Deep dives
Evolution of Maiden Century
Kessahasan, founder of Maiden Century, discusses the evolution of the platform in unlocking the value of alternative data for buy-side customers. Starting as a sell-side analyst in Asia in the early '90s, Kessahasan transitioned to covering equities in Pakistan and Indonesia during the Asian financial crisis. The experience led to a deeper understanding of the importance of alternative data in making investment decisions.
Transition to the Buy Side
Kessahasan's move to the US as a telecom analyst, eventually joining Alliance Bernstein during the 2008 financial crisis, marked a pivotal shift to the buy side. Working with a mutual fund company, Kessahasan became intrigued by the potential of big data and its impact on investment strategies. This transition highlighted the need for a more innovative approach to investment research.
Data Integration and Predictive Modeling
Putting the spotlight on the power of data integration, Kessahasan exemplifies how combining multiple data sets offers a clearer picture for investment decisions. By merging transaction data from different sources, like credit card transactions and distributor sales tracking, Maiden Century enhances predictive models for better insights. The strategy revolves around cleaning and normalizing data, creating accurate forecasts, and providing a visualization engine for effective decision-making.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Facing initial hurdles in gaining trust from both data vendors and buy-side clients, Maiden Century overcame these obstacles by establishing a solid reputation in the industry. Looking ahead, Kessahasan envisions a rapid evolution of data monetization strategies and emphasizes the need for continuous reinvention to stay ahead of changing market dynamics. The future direction focuses on diversifying use cases across various asset classes and investment philosophies.
