Quick takeaways
There are two distinct migrations happening at the US-Mexico border, one driven by economic opportunities and another primarily composed of secretive Chinese migrants.
The hypothesis suggests that the surplus of males caused by China's one-child policy may unintentionally create a standing army through the migration of military-aged men.
The Chinese migrants fleeing China may be motivated by economic opportunities or a desire to escape oppression, and their secrecy could be a result of surveillance in their home country.
The large number of migrants entering the US through Central America raises concerns about homeland security and the federal government's failure to protect the integrity of the country.
Deep dives
The Two Migration Hypothesis
There is a hypothesis that suggests there are two distinct migrations happening. One is a diverse economic migration from various countries motivated by economic opportunities. The other migration is primarily composed of Chinese migrants, mainly military-aged men, who are unforthcoming about their intentions. These two migrations have different demographics, with families and a wider age range in the economic migration, while the Chinese migration skews towards younger men. The treatment and secrecy surrounding the Chinese migration raise questions about its nature and purpose.
Potential Army Hypothesis
One hypothesis relates to the previous idea that the one-child policy in China could unintentionally create a standing army through a surplus of males. This could explain the primarily male composition of the Chinese migration observed in Panama. The idea suggests that these migrants may be part of a larger strategy, potentially facilitated by the Chinese Communist Party, to prepare a force that could be utilized in certain ways.
Alternative Explanation Hypothesis
Another possible hypothesis posits that the Chinese migrants fleeing China may be motivated by economic opportunities or a desire to escape oppression. Their reluctance to divulge information could stem from being surveilled in their home country. This explanation focuses more on the individuals' quest for better prospects rather than a strategic deployment of a military force.
Economic Migration vs. Political Asylum
The large number of migrants moving through Central America into the US poses potential challenges and disruptions. The different treatment and lack of concern from the federal government raise concerns about homeland security and the impact on vulnerable American citizens. The federal government's failure to protect the integrity of the country may be seen as a paradox considering its fundamental responsibilities.
Diaper Spa Raises Controversy in New Hampshire
A debate has emerged in Southern New Hampshire over a new spa that caters to adults who engage in role-playing as children and wear diapers. The Diaper Spa offers services such as virtual play dates and an all-day diaper B&B experience. Some residents have raised concerns and have started a petition to prevent the business from obtaining a license. The controversy raises questions about societal acceptance, shame, and the boundary of individual preferences.
Pregnancy Leads to Neurogenesis in Mice
New research shows that pregnancy in mice leads to neurogenesis in the olfactory regions of the brain. The study suggests that the growth of new neurons, specifically related to recognizing and remembering the scent of newborn pups, helps mothers effectively care for their offspring. Although the findings are specific to mice, it raises questions about the possibility of similar neurogenesis in primates and other mammals.
The Importance of Constructive Criticism
The podcast episode highlights the importance of constructive criticism in various contexts, including scientific research and personal growth. Constructive criticism helps individuals improve their work, identify flaws, and gain a deeper understanding of their subject matter. The episode emphasizes the balance between providing critique and fostering personal development, while acknowledging the potential discomfort associated with receiving criticism.
In this 210th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this episode, we discuss hypotheses about the border situation. Having just returned from Panama, Bret hypothesizes that there are two immigrations happening: the migration driven by the pursuit of greater economic opportunities in the United States, which includes people from all over the world, and a lot of families; and a second, cryptic migration which includes mostly people from China, of military age, heavily skewed towards men. He also reviews a hypothesis from some years back, about the effect of the one-child policy in China, taken in concert with the tendency to prefer boys. We then discuss neurogenesis in pregnant mice; and also the “diaper spa” being opened in New Hampshire, which is only possible because we have stopped allowing ourselves to critique anti-social and anti-societal tendencies.
