The Majesty and Demolition of Penn Station

The original Penn Station in New York City opened in 1910 and was considered magnificent, with its grand architecture and vast space. However, as passenger train travel declined after World War II, the station fell into disrepair and was eventually demolished in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden. Despite efforts by activist architects, the demolition proceeded. This event served as a wake-up call, leading to the creation of the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the passing of New York City's first-ever Landmarks law. The demolition of Penn Station led to the preservation of other historic landmarks, such as Grand Central Terminal, which was almost demolished as well but ultimately saved due to landmark designation and a fight led in part by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
