Deep dives
Exploration of Spielberg's Unmade Projects
The discussion revolves around films that Steven Spielberg was involved with but ultimately did not direct. The hosts highlight projects from various decades, emphasizing the unique opportunities these films could have presented him. For instance, Spielberg's intended direction of 'Ace, Eli, and Roger of the Skies' in the early 1970s represents his earliest aspirations in filmmaking, showcasing his early development as a storyteller. The hosts speculate on how these films reflect Spielberg's evolving vision and whether they could have altered the landscape of his career.
Unearthed Treasures of the 70s
The conversation delves into several projects from the 1970s, including 'California Split,' directed by Robert Altman, which Spielberg passed on due to its content not aligning with his goals. Spielberg's decision highlights his desire to create more personal films rather than mainstream action titles at the time. Similarly, the debate over whether Spielberg missed an opportunity with 'The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings' illustrates the directors' varied paths. These discussions reveal insights into Spielberg's mindset at a pivotal point in his career.
Controversial Themes of the 80s
Moving into the 1980s, the episode examines the film 'Cruising,' which presents a gritty narrative involving Al Pacino as an undercover cop. The hosts reflect on the film's controversy, which signifies a thematic shift in cinema away from Spielberg's usual fare. While they acknowledge the intense style of William Friedkin's direction, they argue that Spielberg would have likely presented a different, perhaps more mainstream approach. This discussion emphasizes how much of Spielberg's filmography is geared towards broader audiences and how this project diverges from that pattern.
The Evolution of Spielberg's Projects
As they progress into the 90s and 2000s, the podcast touches upon notable films such as 'Rain Man' and 'Shrek,' demonstrating Spielberg's varied interests over the years. The potential involvement in 'Rain Man' reflects Spielberg's knack for emotional storytelling, while 'Shrek' represents a shift towards animated narratives. The hosts ponder how Spielberg's unique vision might have reshaped these films or how they resonate with his established themes. This insight showcases how Spielberg's career spans multiple genres and styles that have defined modern cinema.
Reflections on Modern Hits
In discussing more recent endeavors, the podcast mentions 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' and the possibility of Spielberg's direction. The hosts express that Spielberg would likely have provided a stronger, more engaging narrative. They consider the layers of complexity within the film and how they align with Spielberg's storytelling capabilities. This reflection serves as a lens to examine the significance of a director's vision in shaping a film's impact and legacy.
On the August 30, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editor and chief film critic Chris Evangelista to talk about what we’re calling Steven Spielberg’s close encounters.
Movies that were eventually made, and not just ones that he considered making, but he seemed to actively work on in some capacity before not directing. So “Night Skies,” his sci-fi horror movie that would have been a spiritual follow-up to Close Encounters, does not count because that was never made and therefore we have nothing to judge.
