Deep dives
The Transition to a Break
The hosts discuss the decision to take a break from producing the podcast, citing various personal and professional commitments that have made it difficult to prepare adequately for episodes. They express a sense of guilt over not being able to fulfill their usual standards and the challenges in finding time to dedicate to the podcast alongside their lives and work responsibilities. There is an acknowledgment that the nature of their conversations has shifted more towards casual discussions, which they feel might not provide the in-depth content subscribers expect. Their focus is now on taking a step back, allowing life to take precedence, and reevaluating their podcasting journey.
Impact of Social Media
One host shares his experience of stepping back from social media, reflecting on its negative effects on mental well-being and productivity since the pandemic. He recounts how this detachment has created a disconnect with the programming community, which feels increasingly at odds with a space that relies on active social media engagement. Despite having previously engaged extensively with platforms like Twitter and Reddit, he finds that he is now inactive and struggling to balance personal interests with community involvement. This reflects a broader concern about how social media can influence personal relationships and professional endeavors in the tech community.

They reassure listeners that their established community will not dissolve during this break, signaling a desire to keep the lines of communication open despite the hiatus. Support from Slack administrators and listeners alike is noted, reinforcing the podcast's ongoing value and relevance to many. They express intentions to reconnect with the audience potentially in the future, hinting at the possibility of returning in some capacity.

Coding Blocks is signing out for now, in this episode we’ll talk about what’s happening and why. We have had an amazing run, far better than we ever expected. Also, Joe recommends 50 games, Allen goes for the gold, and Outlaw is totally normal. (And we’re not crying you’re crying!)
Thank you for the support over the last 11 (!!!) years. It’s been a wild ride, and the last thing we ever expected when starting a tech podcast was getting to meet so many fantastic people.
UFO 50 is an odd collection of 50 pseudo-retro video games made by a small group of game developers, most notably including Derek Yu of Spelunky. It’s a unique and specific experience that reminds me of spending the night at your friend’s house who had some console gaming system that you’d only ever heard rumors about. The games seem small and simple at first blush, but there is surprising depth. Favorites so far are Kick Club, Avianos, Attactics, and Mortol. (Steam)
