TPS30 NORTHERN TORYISM | Jake Berry, MP
This is our latest interview with the political figures grappling with what happens when a right-wing party succeeds with an economically populist offer. Jake Berry is Conservative Member of Parliament for Rossendale and Darwen, and leads the Northern Research Group - the collection of Tory MPs representing constituencies in the traditionally Labour-dominated north of England. The NRG seeks to petition its party to make good on the higher spending 'side-of-the-bus' populism of Brexit. We ask whether Boris Johnson's Conservative Party really differs from previous incarnations, how the Jeremy Corbyn moment looked from the other side, and get Jake's view of new left experimentation in local government in the north, such as the 'Preston Model'.
