Monitoring Your Heart
Monitoring your heart is crucial because what's inside doesn't stay there. The behavior we exhibit reflects the condition of our hearts or souls. Jesus taught that it's not what goes into a person that defiles them, but what comes out of them. Evil thoughts, harmful behaviors, and mistreatment of others start as internal thoughts. Guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy can rot our souls and put us at odds with God. Therefore, we must monitor our hearts and pay attention to these emotions. Confession, forgiveness, generosity, and celebration are the four ways to address and overcome these negative emotions.
Leaking Behaviors and Their Origins
Our behavior eventually reflects the state of our hearts or souls. When negative emotions like guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy go unaddressed, they leak out and impact our relationships and ourselves. These emotions can stem from feeling a sense of owing someone or something. Guilt arises from feeling indebted to others, while anger occurs when we believe others owe us. Greed springs from the consumption assumption that everything that comes to us is solely for our benefit. Jealousy emerges from the assumption that life owes us something. By identifying and addressing the origins of these emotions, we can prevent them from defining us and damaging our relationships.
Rooting Out Negative Emotions
To safeguard our souls, we need to actively root out negative emotions like guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy. Confession is the antidote to guilt. By acknowledging and apologizing for our wrongdoings, we release the burden of guilt. Forgiveness counters anger. When we choose to forgive those who have hurt us, we free ourselves from the grip of anger. Generosity combats greed. Giving generously with a plan to make a positive impact prevents greed from taking hold of our hearts. Celebration counters jealousy. Celebrating what we have and rejoicing in the blessings of others helps eliminate jealousy. By monitoring our hearts and intentionally addressing these negative emotions, we can safeguard our souls and maintain integrity in our relationships.
By the time we reach adulthood, we’re all pretty good at monitoring our behavior to get what we want now, but what if there’s something more important that we need to monitor to ensure we get what we ultimately want?
