Evitar's Philosophy of Embracing Life and Death
Evitar Frankl, a dear friend who recently passed away, demonstrated an extraordinary grace in facing his terminal illness. Despite being a determinist who believed in the absence of free will, Evitar approached his illness with acceptance, compassion, and deep presence. He saw his journey with cancer as a ceremony, an opportunity for self-realization and integration of past pains and traumas. Evitar emphasized the importance of living with curiosity, love, and laughter, understanding the transient nature of life and embracing both the spiritual and physical aspects of existence.
Evitar's Principles for Waking
Evitar outlined principles to remember upon waking, encouraging appreciation, letting go of desires, and cultivating a sense of enoughness. He emphasized the importance of being present, recognizing the determined nature of life, and developing a deep sense of gratitude for being alive. Evitar believed in the power of self-exploration, self-compassion, and intellectual engagement, while also recognizing the need to help others and improve the world. He viewed life as a gift and encouraged others to appreciate each precious moment.
Honoring Evitar's Legacy
Evitar's philosophy and way of being serve as an inspiration for living a life filled with grace and presence. His teachings remind us to embrace the interconnectedness of the spiritual and physical realms, to approach both life and death with curiosity and acceptance. To honor Evitar's legacy, we can embody his principles of appreciation, compassion, and making a positive impact on others. By cultivating a deep sense of gratitude and embracing the transient nature of existence, we can live more fully and authentically, just as Evitar did.
Living by Principles and Being Determined
Evie Atar had derived concise and well-considered principles for living and truly lived by them. He had a deep acceptance of determinism, which allowed him to show up fully present even in challenging circumstances. Evie Atar's confidence in his principles and determination to live by them, to the point of constantly self-correcting and being self-aware, enabled him to align his philosophy with his way of living.
The Power of Ceremony and Refinement
Evie Atar declared his cancer journey as a ceremony, inviting others to join him. He was determined to make the most of every aspect of life, even in the face of illness and death. The ceremony provided an opportunity for refinement and self-accountability, allowing him to face his own emotions, challenges, and projections with compassion and love. Being in and around the frequency of death served as a reminder to appreciate the present and let go of attachments, revealing the potency of immediate experiences and the transformative power of ceremony.
Today's episode is dedicated to my dear friend, Eviatar Frankel, who died a week ago from complications related to a rare lymphoma. I was privileged to sit with Ev in a men's circle throughout his battle with cancer. Each week, and in countless private conversations, he displayed remarkable grace.
This podcast features readings from Eviatar's personal philosophy, deeply rooted in determinism, and includes two interviews. On the show we hear from Erica Dean, a mutual friend pivotal in Ev's care journey and a woman committed to the path of ceremonial medicine. We also welcome back my mentor and spiritual guide, Benjamin, who shared in the men's group experience with Ev. Additionally, we'll share a voice message from Eviatar—humorous, playful, and insightful—that he sent to many friends after a potent experience in the hospital.
Rarely do individuals possess the courage, wisdom, or awareness to confront death with genuine presence. Yet, in Eviatar’s worldview, he perceived this opportunity for presence in the face of death as a gift. He approached his journey as a ceremony, and it was an incredible privilege for all of us to participate in that ceremony with him.
As the Yawanawa people say, “weak body, strong spirit.”
Eviatar, we cherish you. Thank you for gracing us with your wisdom, humor, and boundless joy.
