Deep dives
Israel-Gaza conflict and the role of Democrats
The podcast episode discusses the recent Israel-Gaza conflict and the response from Democrats. It highlights the pattern of Israeli military assaults on the Gaza Strip and the changing narrative around these attacks. The episode points out that during the latest conflict, the largest block of Democrats in the House of Representatives denounced the assault, leading to President Joe Biden calling for a halt to the operation. The reaction from Hamas, the government in Gaza, was also discussed, as they launched rocket attacks into Israel in response to the evictions of Palestinians in East Jerusalem. The episode emphasizes the shift in coverage and perception of the conflict, with reporting being less sympathetic towards Israel and increased condemnation of human rights abuses. It highlights the powerful speeches made by progressive Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib on the House floor, calling for an end to violence, criticizing the Israeli government, and advocating for justice and human rights for Palestinians.
DMFI's influence and progressive resistance
The episode explores the role of Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) and other groups in opposing progressive candidates in Democratic primaries. It highlights the significant financial backing received by DMFI, AIPAC, and other organizations supportive of continued US support for the Israeli government. The podcast discusses the emergence of a coalition of progressive groups, including Jay Street, Justice Democrats, Sunrise Movement, Indivisible, and Working Families Party, aiming to challenge the influence of DMFI and its allies. However, these progressive groups face significant financial challenges, with limited resources compared to the substantial funding supporting establishment candidates. The episode suggests that the lack of coordinated collaboration between the Squad and these progressive organizations hampers their ability to effectively counter the influx of campaign funds supporting candidates aligned with DMFI and the establishment.
The significance of outside financial support and Sam Bankman Freed's involvement
The episode delves into the role of financial support and the involvement of Sam Bankman Freed in shaping Democratic primary campaigns. It discusses the infusion of money from crypto and Silicon Valley sources, including crypto billionaire Sam Bankman Freed and LinkedIn billionaire Reed Hoffman, into the pro-establishment camp. The episode underscores how these funds, along with the backing of APAC and DMFI, had a substantial impact on shaping races, with costly negative campaigns targeting progressive candidates. It highlights the strategic choices made by these organizations to counter the growing influence of progressive politicians, including Nina Turner. The potential influence of dark money groups, Super PACs, and the deep pockets of these individuals contributes to an unlevel playing field in Democratic primaries.
The challenges faced by progressive candidates and the importance of coalition building
The episode discusses the challenges faced by progressive candidates running in Democratic primaries and emphasizes the need for greater collaboration and coalition building within the progressive movement. It highlights the unique political atmosphere that emerged following the success of Bernie Sanders in 2016, inspiring a wave of progressive candidates for the 2022 midterms. However, the lack of unified fundraising efforts and coordinated support from progressive groups, as well as the absence of significant financial backing from the Squad and Bernie Sanders, hinders their ability to compete financially with well-funded establishment candidates. The episode emphasizes the urgency for progressives to join forces, rally support, and effectively navigate the complex landscape of campaign financing in order to promote their policies and counter the influence of corporate and establishment interests.
More than 18,600 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel’s latest wave of attacks began just over two months ago, following the October 7 Hamas attack that killed some 1,200 Israelis. While the Biden administration continues to support Israel in its devastation, politicians and heads of state around the world are calling for a ceasefire. The last extended war on Gaza, in 2021, would reshape the Democratic Party's posture toward Israel and Palestine.
On this episode of Deconstructed, Ryan Grim brings us another audio documentary, adapted from an excerpt of his new book, “The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution.” In this episode, Grim revisits the 2021 Gaza war. When members of the Squad and their allies began speaking out about the U.S. government’s support for Israel, the debates in Washington grew extremely messy. The Squad’s opposition led to a political showdown, with special interest groups and other politicians applying pressure on those critical of Israel’s attacks. It threatened a government shutdown and further pushed the conversation on the U.S.’s unconditional support for the Israeli military, setting the stage for the widespread opposition seen today, as well as the highly organized and well-funded reaction from supporters of Israel.
