In many ways the metaverse is not new. The gaming industry is the biggest entertainment industry on the planet and has been successfully creating virtual worlds and empowering users to create things for decades. 

'Mods' in games (user modifications) have spun off into some of the biggest games in the world (Counterstrike was originally a mod of Half Life) and have helped extend the life of other games such as GTA (probably the most successful series ever).
