Alejandro Martínez Araiza, General Secretary of Mexico’s National Food and Commerce Union (SNAC), joins the program for a candid discussion about trade, agriculture, labor, and the increasingly consequential relationship between Mexico and the United States. Martínez Araiza has participated in the USMCA review process, including testimony before U.S. officials, where he represented the perspective of Mexican workers and private-sector labor.
In today’s discussion, Sarah and Martínez Araiza examine allegations surrounding Mexico’s trade relationship with China and concerns that third countries may be using Mexico to gain preferential access to the U.S. market. These questions are part of the broader USMCA review, where U.S. and Mexican negotiators have been discussing economic security, rules of origin, agriculture, labor, and ways to ensure the agreement’s benefits primarily accrue to its three member countries. Martínez Araiza shares his view that many of the allegations involving Mexican agricultural and food trade with China are overstated or unsupported.
The conversation also turns to fertilizer supply, vulnerabilities within the global food system, and the ways food and trade policies can be used as sources of economic and political leverage. Martínez Araiza discusses labor exploitation within agriculture and argues that greater coordination between the United States and Mexico—focused on higher wages, improved working conditions, and human dignity—could reduce migration pressures while strengthening both countries economically.
Sarah and Martínez Araiza also explore how trade, labor policy, food security, and immigration are interconnected, and why decisions made during the ongoing USMCA review could have lasting consequences for workers, farmers, businesses, and consumers throughout North America.
