NotYourOrdinaryParts S2 Episode 18: Unpacking the Patriarchy with Rev Karla, Spiritual Teacher
Rev Karla is a spiritual teacher who understands the pain and confusion experienced by those who have suffered religious trauma. Having overcome her own struggles, she is dedicated to helping others recover from their traumas, reclaim their spirituality, and find purpose and authenticity in their lives.
Religious trauma can be a difficult and uncomfortable conversation, however; to shy away from any topic or conversation because it’s uncomfortable can be a disservice. So many don’t know what they’re shying away from because they’ve never had a voice, so for many of us to even start a conversation about difficult topics is hard, let alone to have an opinion about them. I’ve noticed that at times, some don’t have an identity outside of their beliefs so if they’re asked to have a difficult conversation or if they “perceive” that their beliefs are being challenged, it’s often viewed as a personal attack. The main point of this episode was to highlight that we can lovingly and peacefully agree to disagree or feel differently about things and still recognize that we have deep affection and respect for each other and acknowledge that even with the best of intentions; people can get hurt and it is unhealthy to overlook that pain or their lived experience in the name of anything. I knew this conversation would for sure raise some eyebrows, which is fine because while the eyebrows are raised; there are so many things to talk about.

Life can be hard at times and if you’re like me, you may tend to think that you can handle it all on your own. Maybe you’ve done such a good job of “managing for so long” having to do something different or talk to someone can feel uncomfortable. The idea of therapy, to me, felt like I had to admit that there was something wrong with me or that I’d be showing the world that I was broken or didn't have it all together… but when my health started to suffer, and I was anxious 24/7… I realized my body was trying to tell me something was wrong and I learned that there is no “good health” without mental health. Therapy was the answer for me, it helped me put down all of the heavy things that I was carrying that didn’t belong to me. While therapy can provide so much relief, finding a therapist can feel so daunting.
