The hosts introduce Taylor Adkins, a translator, and discuss the speaker's experience in a philosophy degree program. They delve into the concept of fire and its embodiment of change, as well as how philosophical material is transformed into poetic variations. The relationship between science and philosophy is explored, along with the philosophies of Hegel and Laura Well's anarchist ethos. The hosts also discuss establishing terminology and concepts for the episode.

Deep dives
The Function of Non-Philosophy
Non-philosophy acts as a science of philosophy by manipulating its material based on rules that respect the identity of philosophical concepts. The goal is to lift the sufficiency and auto-legitimacy of philosophical material and sterilize it through rigorous analysis and theoretical scrutiny. This approach allows for unlimited pragmatics of philosophy, going beyond artistic mutation and engaging with philosophy on a scientific level.
Becoming and Being in Philosophy
In philosophy, becoming is situated on a plane of intense contingency, where events subsist and insist, producing incorporeal effects. It involves the virtual capacity for bodies to be affected, resulting in transformations from one state to another. On the other hand, being in philosophy represents a reflexive instantiation that accommodates the limits and principles of philosophical materials. Laurel emphasizes the need to preserve the sense of identity of the object of knowledge while prudently manipulating philosophical concepts to avoid the creation of incoherent hybrids.
The Role of Pragmatics in Philosophy
Pragmatics plays a crucial role in engaging with philosophy, whether through creative mediums like comics or the production of memes. Pragmatics considers the change in language based on usage and holds the potential to showcase the effects of the unconscious on signs and semiotics. It is a comprehensive discipline that goes beyond linguistics and encompasses the broader study of the unconscious and its impact on self-expression. By connecting artistic expression with analytical and scientific elements, it creates a space for the unlimited pragmatics of philosophy.
The Genetic Code of Philosophy
The genetic code of philosophy refers to the replicating pattern and sufficiency that enables philosophy to persist through time. It involves the transmission and reproduction of ideas, both within philosophical discourse and through the cultural dissemination of memes. However, it is crucial to maintain a vigilant approach to re-handling philosophical material, avoid falling back on solid foundations, and recognize the provisional and contingent nature of philosophical variations.
Philosophy's High Voice and Abdicating its Crown
The podcast episode discusses the idea that philosophy has always claimed a high voice for itself, seeing itself as the first and ultimate authority on truth and essence. However, La Bueil argues that philosophy needs to abdicate this self-legitimizing essence and suspend its sufficiency. This abdication involves stealing the crown of philosophy, which is its spontaneous effectuation of its own existence and the belief in its inherent truth. By doing so, philosophy can open itself to mutation and testability, allowing for the production of unprecedented and unforeseen effects.
Non-Philosophy as a Transcendental Anarchy
The concept of non-philosophy challenges the traditional model of revolution and antagonism within philosophy. La Bueil's non-philosophy aims to deconstruct the appeal to authority and oppositional negation. It proposes a different path, a non-antagonistic approach that avoids relying on a Kantian/Copernican revolutionary overturning. This middle path, or different approach, questions and suspends philosophy's decisional antagonism and its belief in the primacy of its own assumptions. Non-philosophy introduces a regulated and rule-based form of anarchy, a transcendental hierarchy that allows for the production of new effects and challenges the predetermined limits of philosophy.
This is part two of a series Taylor Adkins and I will be doing on the Univocal edition of Francois Laruelle's Philosophy and Non-Philosophy. Taylor translated the edition we're reading from. This episode will continue to till the ground for the remainder of the book, with the preface and introduction being the material we draw from.
