Deep dives
Sources of Divine Authority in Mormonism
Mormons derive their beliefs from four main sources of divine authority, with the Book of Mormon being the most significant. They also reference the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Bible, although the Bible is considered subordinate to the teachings of the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith, the founder of the church, made numerous adjustments to the Bible to align it with Mormon theology, resulting in over a thousand changes in wording. This hierarchy of texts indicates a fundamental divergence from traditional Christian beliefs, as the Mormons prioritize their additional scriptures over the Bible.
Mormon Beliefs about God and Humanity
Mormons hold unique beliefs about the nature of God and humanity that significantly differ from mainstream Christianity. They believe that all people, including Jesus Christ, existed as spirit children of God prior to their earthly existence, implying a pre-mortal life. Furthermore, they assert that God was once a man on another planet who achieved divinity through obedience, suggesting that humans can also reach a god-like status. This perspective radically contrasts with the Christian understanding of God as eternal and uncreated, challenging foundational doctrines of faith.
Concepts of Jesus and Salvation in Mormonism
Mormons view Jesus as a created being and consider him to be the spirit brother of Lucifer, a belief that contradicts the Christian narrative of Christ's divine nature. Additionally, they teach that salvation is not guaranteed, with members believing that they must earn their progression to godhood through righteous living and obedience. This notion is reflected in their scriptures, which state that grace is only operative after individuals have done all they can, further diverging from the Christian principle of salvation by faith alone. Such beliefs highlight the substantial theological differences that exist between Mormonism and traditional Christian doctrine.
This is one of several clips I will be uploading from a colab I did with Allen Parr evaluating a few different religious groups in light of biblical Christianity. Subscribe to my channel on YouTube to get notified when the other videos in this series go up.
We are using the word “cult” here in the popular negative sense that Christian theology uses; to indicate a religion which imitates Christianity but is not genuinely Christian. The term also has another technical meaning: referring to any religion that has rituals associated with it. That’s not the definition we intend in this video.
