In a politically fueled PM Mood, Danielle Moodie speaks with author and journalist Katherine Stewart, whose crucial work examines how America has been on a path to ending the established barriers between church & state. In her new book The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism, Katherine emphasizes how the rise of the religious right wing is in fact the rise of a political, nationalistic movement that is at its core anti-Democratic, anti-pluralistic, and anti-equality. Danielle and Katherine discuss the ways in which the movement united religious denominations, conservatives and fringe extremists under key issues such as abortion in order to consolidate voting power and how Trump has become the movement’s anointed broker in reshaping our democracy. They also dissect our leadership’s handling of the ongoing pandemic, rooted in the movement’s political and religious rejection of science, expertise, and infrastructure. Despite the uphill battle we have ahead, Katherine sees growing discontent with the status quo, awareness, and activism as a cause for hope and motivation.
