Dawkins in the Classroom: London Students Debate God, Darwin & the Origin Of Life

Author and evolutionary biologist Dawkins leads a discussion with London high school students on Charles Darwin and evolution. Topics include the meaning of life in an evolutionary worldview, the origin of life, the Big Bang theory, the relationship between evolution and religion, and the evolution of the human heart.
Life on earth is a result of the process of evolution, explained by Charles Darwin, with a wealth of evidence supporting the theory over the past 150 years.
Science and religion can coexist, with each providing different perspectives on the meaning and purpose of life.
Deep dives
The Strange Happening on Earth
About four billion years ago, something very strange happened on Earth. Life began, and it is possibly the only planet in the universe where this has occurred. The diversity of life on Earth contrasts starkly with the barrenness found on other planets. The process of evolution, first explained by Charles Darwin in his book 'The Origin of Species,' is responsible for the complex and diverse life forms we see today. The theory of evolution has been gradually understood and supported by a wealth of evidence over the past 150 years.
The Coincidence of Life on Earth
Some people find it coincidental that everything on Earth is perfectly suited for life. However, the concept of natural selection explains that life adapts to fit the conditions of its environment. If conditions were different, life would have evolved to suit those conditions. Additionally, life itself has shaped the planet. For example, plants and photosynthetic bacteria introduced oxygen into the atmosphere, creating the necessary conditions for oxygen-dependent life forms. Life constantly adapts and changes to fit its environment.
Harmony Between God and Evolution
Many religious leaders, including high-ranking officials like the Pope, accept both God and evolution. They may suggest that God initiated the universe and that evolution drove the development of life. Some religious individuals believe that God may have intervened at certain points in evolution. Respectable scientists can be both religious and accept evolution. Science and religion can coexist, with each offering different perspectives on the meaning and purpose of life.
The Future of Evolution
Evolution is a slow process that occurs over vast timescales. While humans have experienced significant evolution over the past millions of years, predicting future evolutionary changes is challenging. Natural selection depends on genetic differences in individuals who have more offspring and better survival rates. With our current technological society, there is no clear advantage for individuals with more significant brains or particular traits to influence evolutionary trends. Additionally, future technological advancements may alter the conditions to which our species must adapt. Thus, predicting future evolution is difficult, and the future of the human species remains uncertain.
I led a classroom of London high schoolers for a Channel 4 documentary, on the subject of Charles Darwin and evolution. It inspired questions from curious young minds that I then engaged with - about the nature of religious belief, about time and space, and about the truth of the origin of life.
