Drs Mikael Fink Vallentin and Lars Andersen present the results of the COCA trial investigating calcium for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. They discuss the use of calcium as a potential intervention, trial methodology and results, patient outcomes, and the need for further research.
The COCA trial results showed that calcium administration during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest did not significantly improve the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) or survival rates at 30 days compared to the placebo group.
The trial results indicated that calcium did not have a significant impact on the quality of life for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors at both 30 days and 90 days after the event.
Deep dives
Primary Outcome: Return of Spontaneous Circulation
The trial investigated the use of calcium during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, aiming to improve the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). However, the results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in ROSC between the calcium group and the placebo group. The percentage of patients with ROSC was 19% in the calcium group and 27% in the placebo group.
Secondary Outcome: Survival at 30 Days
The trial also assessed survival rates at 30 days after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The results revealed that there was no significant difference in survival between the calcium group and the placebo group. Approximately 5% of patients in the calcium group survived at 30 days, compared to 9% in the placebo group.
Additional Outcome: Quality of Life
The trial evaluated the impact of calcium administration on the quality of life of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors. The findings indicated no significant difference in quality of life between the calcium group and the placebo group at both 30 days and 90 days after the event. Overall, the trial results suggested that calcium did not provide any notable benefits in terms of survival or quality of life for patients experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Drs Mikael Fink Vallentin and Lars Andersen (University of Aarhus, Denmark) present the results of the COCA trial, investigating calcium for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The COCA trial results were presented at a Critical Care Reviews Trial Results Presentation Livestream on November 30th, 2021, with a simultaneous publication in JAMA.
