Francis Chan, Christian leader, discusses the temptation to compare oneself to others, the importance of abiding in Jesus to bear fruit, longing for God's presence, and the significance of pursuing intimacy with Him.
Our focus should be on abiding in Jesus rather than comparing ourselves to others and their accomplishments.
Instead of relying on leaders or movements, we should seek a personal relationship with Jesus to bear lasting fruit.
Deep dives
Abiding in Jesus and bearing fruit
To bear fruit in our lives, we must abide in Jesus and recognize our dependence on Him. Without this connection, our efforts are futile. Jesus guarantees that if we abide in Him, we will bear much fruit. Sometimes we compare ourselves to others and their accomplishments, but Jesus reminds us that our focus should be on abiding in Him rather than following worldly patterns. Our purpose is to glorify God by bearing abundant and lasting fruit.
The danger of attachment to people rather than Jesus
We often attach ourselves to leaders or movements instead of being truly connected to Jesus. Jesus wants us to have a personal relationship with Him and seek Him, rather than relying on others to meet with God on our behalf. Moses, David, and great movements begin with individuals who deeply know Jesus and draw their strength from Him. When followers lose sight of Jesus and become attached only to the founder or personality, movements tend to fade away.
Prayer, fruit-bearing, and God's glory
God takes the initiative in choosing and appointing us to bear fruit that lasts. When we pray in Jesus' name, our prayers align with God's desire to bring glory to Himself. Prayer is not just for our benefit but for the glorification of the Father. When we pray for our lives to count and desire to be used by God, He answers those prayers, and through our fruitful lives, God's glory is magnified. We don't need to stress about making things happen, as God is the one who ensures our fruitfulness.
Do you find yourself drawing life from a Christian leader, the things God has promised, or a sense of accomplishment? Or do you just want Jesus? In this second and final part of his classic message on John 15, Francis Chan keeps pointing us back to the reality of our dependence on Christ and that nothing is worth wanting more than Him.
