The Emergence of the Four Imams
After the first three generations, the four imams emerged when knowledge began to be written down and systematized. They documented and codified knowledge, becoming leaders in their field as others did not survive due to not having enough followers. Just like in industries where many companies start but only a few dominate, the four survived out of the 11 methods present at that time.
Differences Among the Four Imams
The four imams differ in their interpretations of the Quran and Sunnah. For example, Imam Hanifa considered the Quran as superior to the Sunnah, while others like the Maliki and Shafi'i schools viewed them as equal sources. They also varied in their views on the strongest type of Sunnah, with Imam Malik valuing the actions of scholars of Medina, Imam Shafi'i preferring solitary hadiths, and Imam Ahmed honoring every statement of a companion as Sunnah and prioritizing Hadith over analogy.
