Deep dives
Mary's Context in 1st Century Palestine
Mary, as a Jewish woman living in 1st century Palestine, experienced life under occupation. She faced threats of sexual violence, oppression, and the loss of rights in a patriarchal society. Additionally, she lived in poverty due to domestic overtaxation. Despite these challenges, Mary played a significant role as a witness to the incarnation, defying societal norms and standing as a testament to the resilience and strength of women in that time.
Expanding Our Perception of Mary
Traditionally, Mary has been depicted as a silent figure, limited to the role of a passive mother. However, a closer examination reveals a much more expansive portrayal. In Luke's gospel, Mary is portrayed as a disciple of Jesus, engaging with his teachings, and later bearing witness to his life, death, and resurrection. The early church traditions also depict Mary as an evangelist and leader, challenging the limited view of her role. By rediscovering Mary's voice, we can gain a broader understanding of her impact and significance.
The Magnificat: A Song of Justice and Revolution
The Magnificat, Mary's song of praise and prophecy, holds great significance. It declares the radical message of justice and overturning power structures. Mary proclaims that Jesus will bring down the mighty and lift up the humble. Her words challenge the social injustices of her time and provide a vision of a world where the marginalized are valued. The Magnificat demonstrates Mary's profound understanding and belief in Jesus' mission and calls us to examine power dynamics and strive for justice in our own lives.
Dr Amy Orr-Ewing, author of Mary’s Voice, explores the context of Mary, mother of Jesus, and looks at why women play such a significant role in Christianity. Plus, what is the Magnificat, why is it so revolutionary? And how is it relevant today?
