Deep dives
The Significance of Understanding Xi Jinping's Political Thought
Xi Jinping's political thought has become a vital guiding force in China, serving as a modern state ideology dictating policies under his leadership. His abolishment of term limits solidifies the enduring influence of his philosophy. The shift in policy-making towards top-level design underscores the necessity of comprehending Xi's thought to anticipate China's trajectory. Unlike traditional incremental changes, Xi emphasizes his thought as the benchmark for policy formulation, elevating its importance in shaping China's future.
Distinctive Features of Xi's Political Thought
Contrary to branding his thought as an adaptation of Marxism, Xi Jinping aligns it more with Sinocentric socialism. He merges Marxist-Leninist principles with traditional Chinese values, portraying a Leninist stance on organizational control rather than a Marxist orientation towards communism. Emphasizing China's rejuvenation under Communist Party governance, Xi sets a vision for national ascendance by 2049, focusing on centralized leadership and global prominence over traditional communist ideals.
Xi's Ideological Position between Communism and Capitalism
While Xi Jinping positions himself on the left of the political spectrum, his policies lean towards the right, emphasizing a centralized authority model. The systemic focus on singular ideology, leader, and party signifies a right-wing political approach. His model prioritizes state control over socialist redistribution, promoting a unique concept of 'common prosperity' through private sector adherence to party directives rather than traditional socialist wealth-sharing measures.
Evolution of Xi Jinping's Political Thought Over Time
Xi Jinping's political thought evolved progressively since his ascension to power in 2012, culminating in a comprehensive doctrine by the 19th Party Congress in 2017. Initially incremental, his ideological framework grew into a societal doctrine, influencing all sectors. The consolidation of Xi's thought reflects a strategic alignment with regime security, entrenching oneness and Chinese nationalism while surpassing rational interpretations of national interests. The enduring challenges lie in adapting to public sentiments amid economic slowdowns without compromising ideological rigidity.
It's a big week for Chinese politics as its annual political conclave gets under way in Beijing. Amid the pomp and heightened security, the Two Sessions is an important preview of the government's plans and policies for the year ahead. And increasingly over the last decade, that roadmap has been underpinned by the instructions of China's leader and the doctrine named for him - Xi Jinping Thought.
But despite the fact that his decisions affect so many, Xi’s beliefs and what guides him can seem difficult to understand, at least to outsiders.
Our guests this week have set out to decipher this.
Steve Tsang is Professor of China Studies and Director of the China Institute at SOAS in London; and his colleague Olivia Cheung is a research Fellow there.
Together they have written a book - ‘The Political Thought of Xi Jinping’ - which sets out Xi’s philosophy and why it’s important for us all to understand his beliefs.
