Embracing Change and Following My Passion: My Journey as an Artist
After taking a break and experiencing burnout, I made the decision to continue pursuing my passion for art and podcasting. I received feedback from listeners about the impact of the podcast on their artistic journeys and realized its importance in my own life. I prioritized speaking with inspiring guests, delving deep into their journeys and lessons learned. This particular episode features artist Alleona Gastaldi, whose playful use of watercolors in urban sketching caught my attention. We discuss her artistic pilgrimage, her love of art, and the knowledge she has gained through her travels. This interview was personally enlightening, and I hope listeners can gain insights from it as well.
Transitioning to Full-Time Artistry
After a successful career as an interior designer, I made the decision to fully commit to my art and establish my own business. I officially identify as a watercolor artist and primarily paint full-time. I have gravitated towards high-quality tools and materials that enhance my artistic process and results. I prefer Cobalt sketchbooks made by Tom Cobalt himself, which utilize professional watercolor paper. I am selective with my pens, sticking to the Limey brand and utilizing a Platinum carbon ink converter for waterproof ink. By prioritizing superior materials, I have found that my artwork flourishes, and it boosts my belief in the value of quality supplies.
The Significance of Limited Palettes and Quality Paints
I recognize the importance of limiting my watercolor palette to a few high-quality paints. While some artists find success with lower-grade materials, I have found that investing in professional paints makes a significant difference in the outcome of my artwork. I have experimented with various watercolor sets, and I have come to appreciate the benefits and harmonious mixing possibilities of select colors. Artists such as Jane Blundell and Hazel Soan have provided valuable insights into color theory and the value of limited palettes. Through their teachings and my own experiences, I have discovered the power and beauty of a thoughtful selection of watercolors.
Ongoing Love for Urban Sketching
Although I have transitioned to primarily creating fine art, my love for urban sketching is still alive. While teaching and practicing urban sketching, I have honed my skills and developed a preference for certain tools. I continue to utilize my trusted limey pens with a platinum carbon ink converter for waterproof ink. In terms of paper, I have found great satisfaction in Cobalt's sketchbooks, which use professional watercolor paper for optimal results. These tools and materials have become integral to my urban sketching practice, enabling me to capture the essence and beauty of the urban environment.
Trying Out New Art Tools
For homework, try using an art tool that you've never used before. Choose something that's been sitting unused in your collection and challenge yourself to create a full sketchbook spread using that tool.
Embracing Change and Transition
Embrace the changes in your artistic journey and don't be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. Remember that your why and your personal growth as an artist are what truly matter.
Building Relationships with Collectors and Supporters
Explore ways to cultivate genuine connections with your supporters, customers, or collectors. Consider sharing updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, or personal stories to deepen the connection and build stronger relationships.
Finding Coziness in Online Communities
Seek out online communities and platforms that support and inspire you as an artist. Whether it's finding a cozy Patreon community, engaging with supportive followers on Instagram, or interacting with other artists in forums or groups, find spaces where you can connect with like-minded individuals.
