Jon Weigell, research project contributor, discusses an AI experiment using 500 chatbots on a Twitter-like platform. They analyze human behavior, Uber's expansion, and the potential for robots to replace humans in online conversations. Ethical questions surrounding language models are also raised.
An AI experiment with 500 chatbots on a social media platform found that a bridging algorithm, which exposed bots to opposing viewpoints, resulted in the highest engagement and reduced polarization.
Amazon now offers security robots for businesses, equipped with high-definition night vision cameras, that patrol office spaces and notify Ring Agents of any anomalies.

AI Powered Social Media Experiment
Researchers conducted an AI experiment using 500 chatbots with different personas to simulate a social media platform. The bots were fed news from July 2020 and then allowed to discuss it in a controlled environment. The experiment aimed to understand human behavior and potentially improve real social media platforms. Different algorithms were tested, including an echo chamber, a discover version based on likes, and a bridging algorithm that exposed bots to opposing viewpoints. The bridging algorithm resulted in the highest engagement and allowed bots to find common ground, reducing polarization.
Amazon Selling Security Robots
Amazon now offers security robots for businesses at a cost of $2,400, along with a $99 monthly fee. These robots can autonomously patrol office spaces using high-definition night vision cameras and notify Ring Agents of any anomalies. Despite initial expectations of a terrifying future, the robots have a cute and non-threatening design resembling the wheel of a desk chair.
Airbnb Acquires AI Startup
Airbnb recently invested $200 million in AI startup gameplanner.ai. This acquisition aligns with CEO Brian Chesky's vision of incorporating AI to transform Airbnb into the ultimate travel agent. The specific role of AI in this endeavor is yet to be fully disclosed. However, it signifies Airbnb's dedication to enhancing the user experience through advanced technologies.
A research project took 500 chatbots, each with their own persona, fed them news from one day in July 2020, and let them loose into a Twitter-like social media platform to discuss it. We’ll tell you what happened next. Plus: Amazon’s got a security robot and Uber wants to be like TaskRabbit now.
