Discussing the economics of cloud seeding and artificial rain in response to recent heavy downpours in Dubai. The episode explores the historical roots of weather modification, its impact on water scarcity, and potential military applications, highlighting its effect on weather patterns and regional economies.
Cloud seeding is an industry in China addressing water scarcity and economic losses.
Concerns exist on the sustainability and implications of artificial rain through cloud seeding.
Deep dives
History of Cloud Seeding
Cloud seeding, initially discovered by Irving Langmore and Vincent Shafer, involves inducing snow in rain-heavy clouds by shooting down dry ice pellets. This method later evolved to using silver iodide particles to create artificial snow or ice crystals. The practice has become an industry, particularly in China, with the world's largest cloud seeding system employing over 50,000 people to address water scarcity and economic losses.
Economic Impact of Cloud Seeding
China's cloud seeding efforts, aimed at alleviating water scarcity, included the South to North Water Diversion Project involving an $80 billion investment. This project transferred water from the Yangtze to northern regions, supplemented by cloud seeding to induce rain artificially. Although cloud seeding can increase rainfall by 5-15%, there are concerns over the sustainability of this practice and its potential implications on regional water sources and international conflicts.
Last week, heavy downpours and floods in Dubai kindled some chatter around cloud seeding. So in today’s episode for 25th April 2024, we talk about the good and bad economics of artificial rain.
