Deep dives
Moral and Spiritual Foundations
The Church educational system emphasizes reinforcing moral foundations and spiritual growth. Its mission is to develop disciples of Jesus Christ who are influential leaders in their homes and communities. This focus on spiritual well-being is complemented by the guidance of prophets and apostles, providing a framework for students to learn and grow. The integration of faith into education aims to make individuals not only better students but also better parents and church leaders.
Accessibility of BYU Pathway
BYU Pathway provides an innovative approach to higher education by allowing access to quality learning without the need to visit a campus. This program emerged to meet the needs of those who could not attend traditional university settings, especially in remote or underserved areas. The Pathway Connect program serves as a foundational entry point, connecting students with online degrees from accredited institutions at very low costs. This initiative allows for broader educational opportunities among diverse populations worldwide.
Internships and Practical Skills
The program places a significant emphasis on practical skills and internship opportunities to enhance employability. Students can gain relevant experience in fields such as accounting, coding, and digital marketing, often obtaining certifications that boost their job prospects. This hands-on approach helps develop confidence in students and gives employers assurance of their capabilities. By bridging the gap between education and the workforce, students can secure remote jobs that align with their studies.
Spiritual and Community Impact
The Church’s educational efforts are deeply intertwined with fostering spiritual growth and community service. Many students who participate in BYU Pathway may be struggling spiritually or financially, and the program creates an environment of support. As they progress through the program, many return to practicing their faith and become active members in their local congregations. This spiritual renewal signifies a broader impact, as individuals not only improve their educational standings but also contribute positively to their communities.
Global Reach and Educational Equity
BYU Pathway has expanded significantly, with thousands of students enrolled globally, particularly in regions with limited educational opportunities. This growth is directly aligned with the Church’s mission to gather Israel and provide equitable access to education. The program stands out in its ability to adapt to the needs of students from various backgrounds, enabling diverse populations to achieve their educational goals. As a result, BYU Pathway exemplifies the Church's commitment to using education as a tool to uplift and empower individuals worldwide.
In 2009, BYU–Idaho launched a program called Pathway. This one-year, reduced-cost online program was offered to students wherever they lived, without stepping on a university campus. Eight years later, in 2017, Pathway changed when the Church announced the creation of BYU–Pathway Worldwide. On this episode of the Church News podcast, we learn the stories of faith that have guided the growth and success of BYU–Pathway with its president, Brian K. Ashton, and Matt Eyring, the school’s vice president of advancement. They join us to share stories they have observed of students’ personal successes, as well as a vision for the program’s future as part of the gathering of Israel and fulfillment of scriptural prophecy about the establishment of Zion.
