Today’s guest is a trailblazer in the world of film and makeup artistry—John Caglione Jr. has been at the forefront of transforming the way we look at characters in film through makeup and prosthetics. His career spans decades, and his work has left an unforgettable mark on some of Hollywood’s most iconic films.
From behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live to winning an Oscar for the 1990 film “Dick Tracy”, John has created iconic looks on equally iconic characters. Other films John has worked on include Martin Scorcese’s The Departed, American Gangster, Mona Lisa Smile and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. His most famous work is perhaps his make-up on Heath Ledger’s psychopathic Joker in the Award-Winning Box Office smash “The Dark Knight” released in 2008.
On today’s episode, John will be discussing his early years working on a SNL as well as being under the mentorship of legendary make-up artist Dick Smith, working with once-in-a-generation talents like Al Pacino and of course Heath Ledger, as well as detailing behind the scenes tales surrounding his process as a make-up artist.
